Let's say that a person who practices Brazilian Jui Jitsu has a BMI of 27...but only 15% body fat. His (oops, "This person's") body fat % is healthy and athletic, but on BMI he'd be considered overweight (shall we say, "Pre-Obese")?!
Huh? Figures lie. And liars figure.
So, other than the numbers on the scales, how do you gauge your fitness?

Based on how many CF workouts I can survive in a week, 1=poor, 2=fair, 3=good, 4=excellent....
I compare my fitness level to others based on height.
how my spandex disco jeans fit.
I compare my fitness level to how well I can keep up with Matt!
As an aside, if anyone has time tomorrow, the school that Karyn works in, M.L. Lausch, will be conducting a fundraiser at the Exeter Dairy Queen. Karyn will be in the dunk tank from 5-7 pm. Come dunk Ktri for a worthy cause!
workout-to-workout, how quickly muscles fatigue during each station/set of reps. day-to-day, how i feel after carrying loads of laundry up/down 2 flights of steps (emmereffer - dryer just buzzed for reals). week-to-week, energy level, mood, clarity of thought and clothing fit.
Time change. Dunk tank starts at 6:00 tomorrow.
Agree with all that DJ mentioned. In addition, I gauge the level at which my fitness is increasing by the "next" workout. Once fit and continuously progressing, the pain, soreness, heavy breathing begin to diminish and eventually disappear. Everything becomes fluid. And I do a lot more, using a lot less!
I measure mine on how many times I puke after class. The less I puke…the better shape I’m in!
