Monday "Did you know...?"

Recently a study suggested that Obesity rates now exceeded the rates of just being Overweight? See article.
Those estimates place about 64% of Americans in the category of either Overweight or Obese. See more at F as in Fat 2009.
Does that mean we made it there...that now it's "normal" to be overweight (2/3s)? CFers, then be in the minority, abnormal, unusual...stay fit!

Matt, thanks for the opportunity to discuss this topic. Travel outside the US and when you return it is obvious we have a growing problem. The issue with BMI is it does not work well for athletic folks like CFers. My guess is many of the best performers at CF would be borderline obesese with the BMI calc. What is the best measure for athletes?

Spelled Obese wrong, sorry.

I'll take a guess here and say % of bodyfat vs. lean body mass. It seems to be a much better way of assessing your overall fitness. Some folks with high BMI's are not actually obese if you look at their percentage of bodyfat. They just carry extra muscle mass which raises their BMI but reduces their bodyfat %. This is a tricky area, and why BMI numbers can be very misleading when used on active folks.

Agreed, the BMI measurement that these studies used is often inaccurate. Still it is easy to see there is a problem in this country.

Does this BMI make my butt look big?

Let's not confuse fitness level with body weight...plenty of people can go all day with running, burpees, etc...they have the VO2 and can apply plenty of Power, but are still carrying too much weight (as we CFers showed by losing 250lbs in the Weight Loss Challenge).

Body composition is measured too with skinfold and electrical current (like the handheld thing at the gym).

But I found this BMI that is formulated for "athletic" people...I typed my info in and got a lower score for my H/W.

Cool site Matt. I went from borderline overweight to "desirable", I have never been tagged with that term anywhere/anytime. Do you have an adjusted IQ test?
