From an engineering perspective it makes perfect sense. Especially the part about force, since F=MA, mass x acceleration, you can see as you run faster the force of the impact with the earth becomes progressively higher, if you can reduce the force of the impact you reduce the overall fatigue on the body. Which would translate to run faster, run longer with less stress...Another way to look at it would be using the kinetic energy equation, KE=1/2MV^2, where V is the velocity and small increases in velocity result in large increases in kinetic energy (because you square the velocity), and some of that energy is dissipated by the impact of your body with the earth....
